A Curly Girl’s Guide to Conditioners: My 5 Favorites

March 7, 2016 Comments : 21

Curly hair has a mind of its own. Good products, like conditioner, can tame the beast. The right conditioners can give your curls life.*This post contains affiliate links. I am only recommending products that I use and love!*

If you’re newly natural or have multiracial children with curly locks, you’ll appreciate this post. I’ve come up with a list of my favorite conditioners and I tell you why they’re so amazing.

Why conditioners and not shampoos you ask? Well, my fellow curly girls know that conditioners run out before shampoos because they are a staple. The right conditioner gives your curls life.

February 2016 was my 2 year anniversary of being natural AKA nappiversary. I think my natural journey has helped me understand the needs of curly hair,  hence the name of a previous post The Mixed Chick Hair Whisperer. You think I’m over exaggerating?

A Curly Girl's Guide to Conditioners: My 5 Favorites

Curly hair has a mind of its own. Good products, like conditioners, can tame the beast.

As I’ve mentioned before, I have the coarsest, tightest, thickest texture of my girls. My oldest has tight, springy curls and the youngest has loose wavy curls. Thankfully if a product doesn’t work for me, usually it works on one of them.

What makes a good conditioner you ask? Well for me, it’s got to detangle. What’s the point of having to use multiple products when you can find one to do it all? That’s one thing that really frustrated me when I became natural. I watched YouTube videos and vloggers discussed all 20 of the product combinations they were using. As a new natural, I spent a fortune on products and cried when they didn’t produce the results I saw on the screen.

Crème of Nature Argon Oil

I love this conditioner because of its thick consistency, perfumey smell, and amazing results. It bonds to my hair and my curls instantly respond. It also works as a fabulous detangler.

Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner

Mixed Chicks seems to work best in curly wavy hair. I use it for my baby girl and it adds shine, moisture, and softness to her hair.

Dove Quench Absolute

This one is a win because it works for all 3 of our curly hair textures! I was amazed at how all of our curls had a love affair with this conditioner. It detangled and took out the hard work for me. This is a must for anyone with curls!

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Hair & Scalp Treatment

This is one step up from a conditioner. Do you suffer from a dry, itchy scalp? I do, especially in the winter months.

This product soothes my scalp with the help from the all natural tea tree oil. It smells amazing and does the job for your scalp and hair simultaneously.

VO5 Moisture Milk Passion Fruit Smoothie Conditioner

Do you see the price tag on the bottle? That’s the first win! I found it at Big Lots, and you can also find it at Dollar General. This worked on both of my daughter’s curly hair types, but it didn’t do much for mine.

It smells amazing, is more than affordable and makes their hair silky smooth. This is better for the curly wavy types, not as much for the coarser, thicker hair types.

Mielle Organics Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner

Can I just say that this product is the all-star player in my book? As you guys know, I’m a huge Shea Moisture fan. But this conditioner takes it all. The mint has an invigorating scent that tingles your scalp.

The thickness of the conditioner sticks to your curls and moisturizes them. Not only that, when I ordered this conditioner, almost the entire jar spilled into the box. I emailed the company, and in 48 hours I had a new jar.

If that isn’t customer service, I don’t know what is!! This is a must have in your collection.

I am having the hardest time with my hair. It is really dry but oily at the same time if you understand what I mean. My hair is shedding really bad and the loose hairs are getting tangled on other hairs. I get fairy knots all over and it is annoying. I really want to make my own conditioners and see how that works but I can definitely say conditioners are life.

Have you been to a professional beautician? I’m sorry to hear about your hair woes. What is the texture of your hair? If you are looking for natural remedies, aloe vera juice is a good moisturizer to spritz on your hair. Coconut oil is great for a deep conditioner and detangler.

No! I am planning on dreading my hair soon so I am not too worried. I think it’s shedding because I just had a baby not too long ago. My hair really weird! My hair has tight curls at the roots in some places and then wave hair in some places and then other places almost straight hair.

Having a baby explains some of the shedding. Hormones will do that to you!

Yeah I realize that now but it is super crazy annoying. Hopefully, drinking fluids and eating healthy will help some. Thank you for the post!

[…] Deep conditioning your hair adds moisture that is lost due to heat or chemical damage. If you have color in your hair, conditioning is a must if you spend time the pool. Color + chlorine wreaks havoc on your curls. Be sure to pick a conditioner that moisturizes, but doesn’t weigh your hair down. I’ve found that the thicker your hair is, the more conditioners with pudding-like consistencies tend to work. For a list of my favorite deep conditioners, click here. […]

ABOUT ME

When I became a mother, I searched for resources about raising biracial/multicultural children and found very few. And when I say little, I mean a minuscule amount. So, I decided to be the resource that I was looking for in hopes of helping moms like myself.
