Discussing #Blacklivesmatter With My Mixed Kids

Yes, I agree that all lives matter.

But in the wake of the things happened to black people in this country, it’s a little insensitive to say that all lives matter is an appropriate response.

I’m not quite sure why when I grieve for the black men & women killed unjustly, I’m looked at as biased for expressing that #blacklivesmatter.

A Story of Hope for South Sudan’s 5th BirthdayIt’s hard for me to not be biased. I am a black woman and I have 3 black brothers, a black father, and black male friends. It’s hard to turn a blind eye when you fear that discrimination has now turned to fatal brutality.

I love having daughters. I always wanted a sister (and didn’t get one) so this is the next best thing. I feel like I was meant to do this. However, there are definite joys & challenges to raising little girls. Growing up in a home dominated by testosterone, I’ve been on a learning curve raising daughters.

As I walk through the grocery store, I often get smiles as people compliment me. And then comes the dreaded, ” You have two girls. You sure are going to have your hands full.” Having two young children close in age keeps me hands full. But what specifically makes people feel sorry for parents of daughters?
